who is DIR EN GREY? - DIR EN GREY (stylized as Dir en grey until 2006) is a Visual Kei band originating from Japan! in their early days they wouldve been considered Kote Kei but now they are more of a Loud Kei band (Kote and Loud kei are substyles/genres/scenes of vkei) the members are: 京 (Vocalist), 薫 ( lead guitarist), Die ( rythm guitarist), Toshiya ( bassist), and Shinya (drummer) the lineup has stayed the same since the birth of DIR EN GREY in 1997. overtime they have become one of the most popular Visual kei bands both in Japan and Overseas. they have gone through many changes but through it all they have remained DIR EN GREY
what does DIR EN GREY mean? - the name DIR EN GREY is a mix of German, French, and English. It roughly translates to "to you in grey" but it was initially thought to mean "grey silver coin" thats where the name of their fanclub magazine, 灰色の銀貨 comes from! The name was taken from a lareine song called Dir en gray and the name of that song comes from another visual kei band named Dir & Grey
the start of DIR EN GREY - Dir en grey was formed by 京, 薫, Die, and Shinya, 4 of the 5 former members of la:sadies and Toshiya, the former support bassist for GOSICK and support guitarist for D†L. in January of 1997 京, 薫, Die, Toshiya, and Shinya all preformed all together for the very first time. They played some songs by the band 黒夢 under the name DEATHMASK. Then on Febuary 2 1997 Dir en grey was officially born! later in 1997 they released their debut album MISSA (it is now considered a mini album but it was sold as a full album on its release). in 1998 they made it to the top ten Oricon charts with thier single -I’ll- with it placing 7th, getting themselves the highest position of an indie band at the time -I'll- was the first of many releases to make it to the top 10! On January 20th 1999 they made their major debut with 3 singles アクロの丘, 残-ZAN-, and ゆらめき with all 3 being produced by Yoshiki from X Japan.
